I'm enjoying these so much, Tree. I saved them both up to read them properly on a big computer screen rather than rushing and reading them on my phone whilst stirring pasta or something. I really REALLY like how kind you are to your younger self (and rightly so!). I have always been a bit dismissive of and disappointed in my younger self, and when my parents died I sent most of my own child/teen musings and pictures and photos to the tip. As we are of a similar age and had similar interests (local newspapers, power station trips, Jason Donovan...) and similar handwriting (aaah the 90s) I'm getting such a lot out of all this AND being kinder to the memory of Little Joy in the process. So: THANK YOU.

Also, I have concerns. Isn't it 'More haste, less speed' ? Was your dad getting it wrong ON PURPOSE? I fear we are looking at a form of playful sabotage... *gasps*

Well well well, you're right! To be honest, I think my dad said it the 'right' way around. As a kid, I never got it. To me it sounded like he was saying, 'More quick, less quick'. At some point as an adult I've had what I now know is a 'wrong' brainwave about it, where I've thought, 'Oh, if you're hasty you might be careless. So less haste is required, and more speed.' I actually stand by that and will now begin the process of having that phrase changed to suit my interpretation.

JOY! This is just the best comment to receive. I'm so glad you're getting something out of this, and what a thing to get - to be kinder to your younger self. I love that. I'm just thinking now that the self-kindness isn't something that's too intentional, but maybe it's part of a general sense that we can only ever do our best with what we know at any time. I do enjoy a tut and a eye-roll at Little Teresa, though. I'm just working on the next issue, it's gone a layer or two deeper than this one and because of all of our similarities, espesh with the parents, you might 'enjoy' that one too. Big thanks to you Big Joy :-)
